A Short History Of New Jersey: History Of The Garden State
One of the oldest states, and one of the original 13 colonies, we often say that NJ was originally settled by Native Americans – specifically Lenni-Lenape (“The Delaware”) tribes. In fact, people lived in the future “New Jersey” for over 2,500 years. Archeological evidence (mostly pottery) of this was found throughout the state. The Dutch emigrated to the NJ area in the 15 century, and colonized an area along the Hudson River called New Netherland. The English took over in 1664 and – seeing how it was sandwiched between the Hudson River and Delaware River – named the area after the “Isle Of Jersey” in the English Channel. New Jersey was given to the British Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.
New Jersey: The Crossroads Of The American Revolution
NJ earned the name “Crossroads Of The American Revolution” due to its pivotal location between British occupied New York City and Philadelphia (a rebel capital), General George Washington spent more days in NJ than any other state during the American Revolutionary War. He spent much of the time protecting Philly from enemy invasions marching through NJ from NYC. New Jersey endured more skirmishes than any other state as well, including the famous Battle of Trenton, Battle of Princeton and Battle of Monmouth. The victory Washington claimed in Trenton in 1776 is considered the most important military victory in the history of the United States. Had it been lost, Britain would likely have won the war and the USA as we know it would not exist. Post-war, New Jersey was the 3rd state in the nation to adopt the US Constitution, and was the 1st to approve the US Bill Of Rights. In 1787, the New Jersey Plan, proposed by NJ delegate William Paterson, led to the creation of the US Senate. They established the official capital of New Jersey in Trenton, NJ in 1790.
New Jersey And The American Industrial Revolution
New Jersey was also a crucial location for the American Industrial Revolution. Since NJ didn’t play much of a role in the Civil War, it focused on innovation instead. The state began building large numbers of new canals, roads, water-powered textile factories, and manufacturing plants along the Passaic River. Farms became cities, shops became factories, and Hoboken even built the very first steam railroad in America (as well as the location for the first ever professional baseball game in 1840).
The Early 20th Century In New Jersey
Thomas Edison build a laboratory in Menlo Park (and later another in West Orange) and brought the world innovations like the light bulb (and standardized the means of powering other electrical appliances), sound recording, and video recording – in fact he obtained 1,093 patents. Christie Street, of Menlo Park was the first street in the entire world to get electric lights. Today, Edison’s laboratories are still a popular tourist attraction in New Jersey. The New Jersey Shore gained popularity in the 1920s, and Atlantic City’s boardwalk – the oldest in the world – was a large draw.
The New Jersey Constitution Of 1947 & NJ’s post-World War II Suburb Expansion
The new constitution that NJ adopted in 1947 banned segregation years before the civil rights movement, and was considered highly progressive (despite being the last of the northern states to abolish slavery). After the war, New Jersey’s population grew exponentially in the suburbs where affordable housing developments were built and federally backed mortgages became available.
New Jersey History: The Cold War In NJ
Again, New Jersey’s location made it a crucial location during the Cold War defense. A military command center was built in NJ. Anti-aircraft missile batteries, air defense radar sites, interceptor aircraft bases, surface to air missile sites, and gun batteries were installed throughout the state to protect the nearby major metropolitan areas of Philadelphia and New York City from long-range Soviet attacks.

The climate of New Jersey classification of New Jersey is humid subtropical in South Jersey with a continental climate in North Jersey, particularly in the northwestern area of the state. The northwest part of New Jersey is the snowiest due to the higher elevations that earn it a Dfb classification. During the winters, New Jersey can experience Nor’easters, which are snowstorms that affect the Northeastern United States, and Atlantic Canada. However, many would-be snow events in the state end up turning to rain due to warm ocean air being brought in by the storm. New Jersey is known for the quality of its education. In 2015, the state spent more per each public school student than any other U.S. state except New York, Alaska, and Connecticut, amounting to $18,235 spent per pupil; over 50% of the expenditure was allocated to student instruction.[177]
According to 2011 Newsweek statistics, students of High Technology High School in Lincroft, Monmouth County and Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, Bergen County registered average SAT scores of 2145 and 2100, respectively,[178] representing the second- and third-highest scores, respectively, of all listed U.S. high schools.[178]
Princeton University in Princeton, Mercer County, one of the world’s most prominent research universities, is often featured at or near the top of various national and global university rankings, topping the 2022 list of U.S. News & World Report.[179] In 2013, Rutgers University, headquartered in New Brunswick, Middlesex County as the flagship institution of higher education in New Jersey, regained medical and dental schools,[180] augmenting its profile as a national research university as well.[181]
In 2014, New Jersey’s school systems were ranked at the top of all fifty U.S. states by financial website Wallethub.com.[182] In 2018, New Jersey’s overall educational system was ranked second among all states to Massachusetts by U.S. News & World Report.[23] In both 2019 and 2020, Education Week also ranked New Jersey public schools the best of all U.S. states.[20][21]
Nine New Jersey high schools were ranked among the top 25 in the U.S. on the Newsweek “America’s Top High Schools 2016” list, more than from any other state.[183] A 2017 UCLA Civil Rights project found that New Jersey has the sixth-most segregated classrooms in the United States.[184]

Is There A North Jersey And South Jersey?
Yes and no. The concept of a North & South Jersey is called a two-portion approach. North Jersey & South Jersey have no actual divide or border you’ll find on a map, but there is a distinct cultural difference between the two halves of the state. Residents generally define North New Jersey as anything North of NJ Interstate I-195.
North Jersey reflects the influence of nearby New York City – particularly Manhattan – whereas South Jersey reflects the influence of nearby Philadelphia. Northern NJ is also very densely populated and urban, compared to Southern NJ (South of Interstate I-195) where there is still much farmland.
New Jersey Sports Fans: NY or Philly?
The biggest divide between north jersey and south jersey residents is often between professional sports fans. Baseball fans in North Jersey typically root for the NY Yankees or NY Mets, while South Jersey fans support the Philadelphia Phillies. Football fans in North NJ root for the NY Giants or NY Jets, and South NJ fans support the Philadelphia Eagles. Hockey fans in North-Jersey support the NJ Devils, while South-Jersey fans root for the Philadelphia Flyers. Plus, North Jersey has QuickChek convenience stores, whereas South Jersey has WaWa Convenience Stores. It’s a big deal.

Is There A Central Jersey?
Maybe? There is also a dispute as to whether there also exists a Central Jersey that is largely defended by North Jersey residents, and refuted by South Jersey residents. This theory is called the three-portion approach (North and South Jersey separated by Central Jersey in the middle.
The three portion approach separates the state into North Jersey: Sussex County, Warren County, Morris County, Passaic County, Essex County, Bergen County, and Hudson County. Central Jersey includes Hunterdon County, Somerset County, Mercer County, Middlesex County, Monmouth County, and Union County. This leaves South Jersey with Ocean County, Burlington County, Camden County, Atlantic County, Gloucester County, Salem County, Cumberland County, and Cape May County.

The Bendix is the most diner-y of diners in New Jersey – instantly recognizable as a classic truck-stop diner. It’s got all the hallmarks, from gaudy neon signs (including a steaming coffee cup and a missing letter or two), to newspaper vending machines, to chrome trim, to a combo of booth and counter seating.
If you close your eyes and picture a classic 1950’s diner, you’ll see the Bendix. In fact, it’s so iconic it’s actually been in many films and commercials over the years. Barry Levinson’s “Diner” in 1982 had scenes shot here, in 1992, the film “Jersey Girl” with Dylan McDermott shot scenes at the Bendix, and Whoopi Goldberg filmed scenes here in the film “Boys On The Side” in 1995.
In 2015, Toyota filmed a “Back To The Future” commercial at this diner, and Jerry Seinfeld stopped by during his “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” series. Most recently, an indie pop band called Bleachers set the music video for “Stop Making This Hurt” inside the Bendix, and the diner appears in scenes of the “Sopranos” prequel movie.
Oh – and the food is great, the family that owns and operates it are super friendly. The Bendix Diner is quite an experience – you won’t want to miss it!

A Short History Of New Jersey: History Of The Garden State
One of the oldest states, and one of the original 13 colonies, we often say that NJ was originally settled by Native Americans – specifically Lenni-Lenape (“The Delaware”) tribes. In fact, people lived in the future “New Jersey” for over 2,500 years. Archeological evidence (mostly pottery) of this was found throughout the state. The Dutch emigrated to the NJ area in the 15 century, and colonized an area along the Hudson River called New Netherland. The English took over in 1664 and – seeing how it was sandwiched between the Hudson River and Delaware River – named the area after the “Isle Of Jersey” in the English Channel. New Jersey was given to the British Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.

NJ earned the name “Crossroads Of The American Revolution” due to its pivotal location between British occupied New York City and Philadelphia (a rebel capital), General George Washington spent more days in NJ than any other state during the American Revolutionary War. He spent much of the time protecting Philly from enemy invasions marching through NJ from NYC. New Jersey endured more skirmishes than any other state as well, including the famous Battle of Trenton, Battle of Princeton and Battle of Monmouth. The victory Washington claimed in Trenton in 1776 is considered the most important military victory in the history of the United States. Had it been lost, Britain would likely have won the war and the USA as we know it would not exist. Post-war, New Jersey was the 3rd state in the nation to adopt the US Constitution, and was the 1st to approve the US Bill Of Rights. In 1787, the New Jersey Plan, proposed by NJ delegate William Paterson, led to the creation of the US Senate. They established the official capital of New Jersey in Trenton, NJ in 1790.

New Jersey was also a crucial location for the American Industrial Revolution. Since NJ didn’t play much of a role in the Civil War, it focused on innovation instead. The state began building large numbers of new canals, roads, water-powered textile factories, and manufacturing plants along the Passaic River. Farms became cities, shops became factories, and Hoboken even built the very first steam railroad in America (as well as the location for the first ever professional baseball game in 1840).
The Early 20th Century In New Jersey
Thomas Edison build a laboratory in Menlo Park (and later another in West Orange) and brought the world innovations like the light bulb (and standardized the means of powering other electrical appliances), sound recording, and video recording – in fact he obtained 1,093 patents. Christie Street, of Menlo Park was the first street in the entire world to get electric lights. Today, Edison’s laboratories are still a popular tourist attraction in New Jersey. The New Jersey Shore gained popularity in the 1920s, and Atlantic City’s boardwalk – the oldest in the world – was a large draw.

Is There A North Jersey And South Jersey?
Yes and no. The concept of a North & South Jersey is called a two-portion approach. North Jersey & South Jersey have no actual divide or border you’ll find on a map, but there is a distinct cultural difference between the two halves of the state. Residents generally define North New Jersey as anything North of NJ Interstate I-195.
North Jersey reflects the influence of nearby New York City – particularly Manhattan – whereas South Jersey reflects the influence of nearby Philadelphia. Northern NJ is also very densely populated and urban, compared to Southern NJ (South of Interstate I-195) where there is still much farmland.
New Jersey Sports Fans: NY or Philly?
The biggest divide between north jersey and south jersey residents is often between professional sports fans. Baseball fans in North Jersey typically root for the NY Yankees or NY Mets, while South Jersey fans support the Philadelphia Phillies. The Bendix is the most diner-y of diners in New Jersey – instantly recognizable as a classic truck-stop diner. It’s got all the hallmarks, from gaudy neon signs (including a steaming coffee cup and a missing letter or two), to newspaper vending machines, to chrome trim, to a combo of booth and counter seating.
If you close your eyes and picture a classic 1950’s diner, you’ll see the Bendix. In fact, it’s so iconic it’s actually been in many films and commercials over the years.
