What Is Malware?

What’s the difference between viruses and malware?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Any software program that does “bad” things is considered to be “Malware”. A “Computer Virus” is one type of malware with a very specific definition:

“Software that is capable of self-replication (attaching copies of itself onto other programs or files) that has been loaded onto a computer (or network) without the owner’s knowledge.”

Other types of malware include spyware, ransomware, adware, bloatware, crapware, browser hijackers, rootkits, trojans, worms, search engine hijackers, and more.

It’s important to have an Internet security system that protects you  – not just from viruses, but from all types of malware. Having antivirus is a good start, but a comprehensive solution incorporates multiple layers like firewall, user education, endpoint detection & response, DNS filtering & more.

7 Most Common Types Of Malware

Below are the 7 most common types of malware, and where they usually come from.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Virus
  • Spyware
  • Bots
  • Worms
  • Trojans
  • Adware
  • Ransomware

Viruses are the most common type of malware.

They are most often spread through email attachments & infected websites.

Depending on the virus's intent, an infected computer is at risk of data loss, system corruption, or system takeover by botnets. The computer's users are also at risk of identity theft.

Spyware is most often installed by hiding in the setup files of "free software" you download from the Internet (games, coupons, emoji makers, etc.).

Once installed, spyware tracks & records your computer activity. This includes browsing history, account usernames & passwords, financial data, and more. It then sends this information back to its creator, so they can sell your information to the highest bidder.

Bots are what we call computers that have been hijacked by malware, and are now forced to do the malware's bidding. Often, the infected computer becomes part of a large network of computers that are set to a unified and often malicious task. This is called a botnet.

Botnets are the work force behind many online scams. They keep the scammer's identity & location anonymous by using their malware victim's computers to do their dirty work.

Worms are malware that rely on one or more specific flaws in a network's security that they are coded to exploit. Once they've breached, worms can quickly infect all the computers on a network.

Infected computers are at risk of data loss, system corruption, or becoming part of a botnet. The computer's users are at risk of identity theft, ransomware attacks & other stolen information.

Trojans (or Trojan horses) are a digital wolf in sheep's clothing. They appear to be a legitimate file, perhaps a photo, game or Word document, but are actually malicious software capable.

Once installed, the computer is at risk of data loss, system corruption, ransomware attacks, infections from further malware, or becoming part of a botnet. The computer's user is at risk of identity theft or stolen files.

Adware is malware that is known to bombard a user with advertising. It is often the result of a gap in network security that lets adware onto a computer.

Once installed, you'll see effects such as a large increase in the number of ads and pop-ups on your screen. Your browser's homepage and search page may be changed, and reputable sites may be redirected to advertising sites instead. Most adware is also spyware, and records & sends out information about your usage like logins, web activity & keystrokes.

Ransomware is malware that encrypts all your files so they can't be opened. It then offers to sell you the encryption password... for a hefty sum.

If you don't pay, you've lost all your files. If you do pay (usually through bitcoin to keep it anonymous), you might get at least some of your data back. No guarantees.

We recommend keeping an offline backup to avoid dealing with any ransomware extortion.

Don’t Trust Your Computer To Big Name Repair Shops

Without Reading This First…

Geek-Squad-Alternatives

Hi, my name is Chris, and I’m the owner of Geeks On Command!. Welcome, and thank you for considering our services.

My team and I have worked with some of the biggest names in computer repair, including:

  • Geek Squad

  • Geeks On Site

  • uBreakiFix

  • HelloTech

  • Microsoft Store

  • Apple Store

  • MicroCenter

  • RescueCom

When we started Geeks On Command!, we wanted to keep the best parts of these companies, while changing the parts that often caused bad customer experiences. For Example:

What You Won’t Find At Geeks On Command…

Are bad customer experiences like these:

Assembly Line Repairs

Everyone uses their computer differently, and for different things. Big name computer repair shops like Geek Squad train their technicians to set up every PC the same way, keeping mostly default settings.

While in their employ, I often knew with certainty that I could save a customer SO much time or frustration by changing a setting here, or adding a plugin there, but we weren’t allowed to make (or even recommend) these changes.

Our technicians are trained and encouraged to make personalized suggestions designed to increase your productivity, or remove common aggravations.

I personally feel great when I can save my customers time, or make their day to day less frustrating. It’s one of the biggest reasons I get so much satisfaction from what I do.

Unqualified Technicians

Most retail computer repair shops don’t pay very well, which is one of the reasons I started this company. I loved what I was doing, but couldn’t survive on the paychecks.

This income deficiency makes it difficult for them to hire/keep qualified technicians, so instead they hire “tech-savvy” college kids with absolutely no computer repair experience. As lead bench technician, I was frequently the one who trained these new hires.

Some got really good, and quickly moved on to better paying IT jobs. Others never really took to it, and many a rookie mistake happened with customer’s computers. This usually resulted in “boomerangs” (computers that were “repaired” being brought back with the same problem).

Other times, the results were really horrible (accidently-deleted pictures, corrupted Excel sheets, records lost from QuickBooks, physical damage to laptops, etc.). I felt so bad when that happened… what a truly miserable, and avoidable experience for those poor customers.

We pay competitively to keep a steady team of fully qualified, experienced, professional computer technicians that get the job done right the first time.

Overpriced Services

Retail repair shops tend to have high prices for repairs. Say you have a laptop, and your hard drive needs to be replaced.

This would be a very typical bill:

Diagnostics: $49
New Hard Drive: $99.99
Hard Drive Installation: $49
OS Installation w/updates: $129
Data Migration: $99
Software Setup: $49

Total: $474.99

For only about $50 more, I could buy a brand-new laptop!

We don’t have a retail location. We come to you – either through computer repair house calls, or remote support. This eliminates many costly expenses which our computer store competitors must account for in their pricing (like rent, utilities, cleaning services, maintenance, city permits, décor, etc.).

This allows us to offer much more affordable computer repair prices. For example, here is the bill we recently sent our customer for the same services:

New Hard Drive: $55.99
2 Hours Labor: $250
Technician Notes: Ran diagnostics, installed drive, installed/updated Windows 10, migrated data. Customer had questions about Windows 10 so I gave a tutorial. Customer is happy with service.

Total: $305.99

Compared to the average $424.99, we’re nearly 30% less expensive. In addition to saving about $120, the repair was done in their own house, and in two hours. Had they brought their computer to a local computer repair shop, it would likely have been a 3-5 day check-in.

3-5 Day Wait

Many shops require customers to check in their computers for repair.

I get it. It’s an easy way to increase profit (by paying one technician to fix multiple computers at once). That said, I certainly wouldn’t want to be without my computer for “3-5 business days”.

I’d be lost without it.

We don’t do check-ins. We fix your computer in your own home or office, and we’ll stay as long as it takes to get the work done.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We’ll get your PC running as quickly and efficiently as it ran on the day it was purchased – even if it no longer starts!

Yes! Our No Fix, No Fee Warranty:

Our service warranty extends 30 days from the original service date.

We’ll provide a FULL REFUND for all services if we are unable to resolve your problem to your satisfaction. If your computer experiences the same symptoms as it did before it was repaired, we’ll repair the problem (through remote support) at no further cost to you.

If we are still unable to provide a satisfactory solution, we will return your money (less any parts purchased). If new parts or software are required to complete your warranty repair, you’ll be billed only for these parts or software, not for labor.

*Disclaimer: Follow-up services provided under warranty will be performed via remote support when applicable. Geeks On Command! is not responsible for malware re-infection. If viruses or other malicious software were removed from your computer, and it was subsequently re-infected at any point after this service, it will be considered a new issue. Other unqualifying issues include: liquid damage, power damage, misuse, or any other damage, hardware or software failures that occurred subsequent to any repair. Additionally, we are not responsible to warranty repair any issues that were not brought to the attention of the technician during the original repair. We are also not responsible for any issues caused by unlicensed, pirated or otherwise illegal software. Our warranty does not extend to connectivity issues with peripheral devices (printers, webcams, speakers, etc.) that were not installed, connected or tested by the technician during the original repair. Replacement may be considered a satisfactory solution in rare circumstances where repairs would cost more than replacement. Lastly, this warranty does not apply to Data Recovery Services as it has its own guarantee. Basically, if a problem is related to the original repair, or if we missed something, we will resolve the problem to your full satisfaction at NO COST. Guaranteed.
